G6PD and benzocaine

Benzocaine can be problematic for individuals with G6PD deficiency because it can cause methemoglobinemia, a condition where the hemoglobin in red blood cells is altered and can't effectively deliver oxygen. G6PD deficiency impairs the body's ability to protect against oxidative stress, making individuals more susceptible to methemoglobinemia from certain drugs and other agents, including benzocaine.

Sildenafil, a medication used to treat erectile dysfunction, can be used in patients with G6PD deficiency, but with some caution. While sildenafil itself doesn't directly interact with G6PD, it can potentially exacerbate the effects of oxidative stress in individuals with the deficiency, particularly when combined with other medications or substances known to cause oxidative stress.
